This 2021 photograph looks straight up from the inner courtyard of Hong Kong’s so-called Monster Building in Quarry Bay — the E-shaped cluster of Montane Mansion, Oceanic Mansion, Fook Cheong Building, Yick Cheong Building and Yick Fat Building on King’s Road.

What began in the 1960s as Parker Estate later became a city within a city: more than two thousand flats, ground-floor dried seafood and herbal tea shops, and a courtyard so tight that windows, pipes and air-conditioners almost close over the sky. That geometry made the place famous — from Transformers: Age of Extinction and Ghost in the Shell to photographers and travellers who still come looking for the same vertical wound of light.

This postcard holds that violet evening: the towers stacked to the edge of the frame, a single slot of sky still open. A small, portable fragment of high-density Hong Kong — to send, to keep, or to pin above a desk.
