A Vertical City Framed by One Sliver of Sky
This 2021 photograph looks straight up from the inner courtyard of Hong Kong’s so-called Monster Building in Quarry Bay—an E-shaped cluster of five interconnected 18-storey towers on King’s Road: Montane Mansion (海山樓), Oceanic Mansion (海景樓), Fook Cheong Building (福昌樓), Yick Cheong Building (益昌大廈) and Yick Fat Building (益發大廈).
It began in the early 1960s as Parker Estate (百嘉新邨), named after nearby Mount Parker. The original developer vanished mid-build and the project stalled as an unfinished shell. Five separate companies later took over different blocks; occupation permits were issued in 1972. The result is not one building but a dense, slightly mismatched city-within-a-city: around 2,243 flats and, at its peak, close to ten thousand residents. Ground-floor shops still sell dried seafood, hardware and herbal tea—the everyday texture of old East Island Hong Kong.
What made the complex world-famous is the courtyard itself. Windows, air-conditioners, pipes and laundry stack into a near-solid wall. A narrow slot of sky is all that remains. That geometry—and the sense of being held inside a living machine—drew French photographer Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze’s Vertical Horizon, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), the live-action Ghost in the Shell (2017), Mondo Grosso’s Labyrinth video, and later local work such as Ian Chan’s 二期大樓. Korean stars have since treated the same courtyard as a pilgrimage spot.
This print freezes that courtyard on a violet evening in 2021: the towers almost close over the frame, the sky a single vertical wound of colour. It is both a document of Hong Kong’s high-density housing history and a piece of cinematic urban landscape.
